Earlier this week, Minnesota's Attorney General Keith Ellison elevated charges against the police officer who murdered George Floyd and also charged the three other officers present for aiding and abetting murder.

This is a step toward justice for George Floyd and his family, but the fight for racial justice and equity is far from over.

Just this week in Tacoma, a medical examiner's report confirmed that the March death of Manuel Ellis, a Black man, was the result of physical restraint and oxygen deprivation from officers while in police custody. Like Eric Garner and George Floyd, he cried out, "I can't breathe." Tragedies like Manuel's, Eric's, and George's are not new. Nor are they rare. Our Black neighbors and friends continue to face excessive force -- and even death -- during encounters with law enforcement.

While this is a painful moment in our nation's history, it is the exclamation mark on hundreds of years of trauma for our Black communities. I am encouraged by the number of people coming together from all walks of life to demand justice and foundational change, from Seattle to Washington, DC. To those who are peacefully marching to demand accountability or fighting from home for structural reform, I want you to know that I see you, and I stand with you.

In this moment, our country needs leaders who bring us together -- not divide us with hateful rhetoric. President Trump has once again failed to lead and failed to move our nation towards healing. We cannot allow his words and actions to sow division.

We have work to do, and we need to do it together. All of us. If you are able, please contribute to the ACLU or the NAACP Legal Defense Fund to support the vital work they're doing to fight for justice and equality for all.
