Like so many, my heart is heavy thinking of all the lives lost and brutalized
because of the systemic racism that continues to endure in our country. Our
communities are mourning George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and
countless others -- both known and unknown.
For too long, for too many, inaction has been the response to injustice.
Enough is enough.
We have so much more work to do to change the systems, structures, and laws
that have allowed tragedies like George Floyd’s murder by those entrusted to
protect him. Our criminal justice system is broken, but no part of our society
is colorblind.
To me, Black lives matter also means that Black health care matters, Black
employment matters, Black student debt matters, and Black opportunity matters.
We must come together to make real the promise of our democracy and ensure that
every American is treated equally no matter the color of our skin.
If you’re able, I encourage you to donate to local organizations fighting for
racial justice in TX-23 such as:
* NAACP San Antonio

* Fronterizo Fianza Fund, El Paso <[link removed]>
* San Antonio Area African American Community Fund

* San Antonio Protester Freedom Fund <[link removed]>
I’d also encourage you to support Black-owned businesses in our community.
Here’s a list of Black-owned businesses in San Antonio.

We can’t give up now. The road to justice is long, but we’ll walk it together.
