I’ll get right to it: President Trump’s actions this month to impose 25% tariffs on our nation’s two largest trading partners threaten unfathomable damage across the American economy. The stock market has tanked as the administration has gone back and forth on these tariffs, and the cost to families has already been evident. It’s my privilege to represent the hard working folks of Connecticut’s Second District, and I’ll never stop fighting for policies that support my constituents.

From higher grocery costs for families to a slowdown in housing construction, this trade war with two of our closest allies is shortsighted and counterproductive. Here in Eastern Connecticut, I’m particularly concerned about impacts to our shipbuilders, who rely on Canada for a variety of critical materials and supplies. Make no mistake—these new tariffs will slow shipbuilding at a time when our maritime industrial base is working hard to fulfill the U.S. Navy’s vision for a larger fleet.
The bottom line on these tariffs is that the costs will be passed on directly to American consumers. We can expect higher prices on a wide variety of goods and services — and retaliatory tariffs from Mexico and Canada will disrupt our nation’s economy in countless ways. Trade wars don’t have winners, and we must hold the president accountable.
