Hi Friends,
During a Cabinet meeting on Monday, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, “We’re going to eliminate FEMA.”
That would be a horrible decision.
Vermont has been hit hard by flooding each of the last two years. Vermonters lost their homes, their business, their farms. Some lost their lives.
It would have been so much worse without FEMA.
FEMA is not perfect. I’ve advocated for reforms to streamline the process of getting resources where they need to go and helping local communities make decisions about what they need to recover. But eliminating the agency entirely isn’t the answer.
The impacts of climate change mean that disasters are going to happen more frequently and be more destructive in the future. Without FEMA, responding to and recovering from these disasters would be so much worse.
I’ll fight this with everything I have.
Thanks,
Peter
