Tell Congress: Pass a budget that funds human needs, not corporate greed
All people should have access to food, health care, and the resources they need to thrive. But recently, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on a budget measure that would harm people of all ages across the country. The measure would slash hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid, SNAP food assistance, and other human needs programs—while supporting $1.5 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy. Urge Congress to reject these cuts and pass a budget that prioritizes the well-being of all people over corporate profits!

Immigrant activist Jeanette Vizguerra reaches supporters from inside ICE detention
Earlier this month, ICE forcibly detained Jeanette Vizguerra—a mother, immigration activist, and community leader in Colorado. AFSC and many across the country are demanding her release. We organized a vigil outside of the for-profit detention center where Jeanette has been locked up since March 17. During the event, she was able to call her daughter and send a message directly to the crowd. “This fight is not only for me but for everyone in the detention center,” she said. Read more. Michigan prison sentences are the nation’s longest. Bipartisan bills could fix that.
Michigan’s average prison sentence length is about three times the national average. That has left the state with an aging prison population—and a rigid sentencing system that is costly and failing to adapt to modern realities. Today, Michigan has an opportunity to address this challenge through a pragmatic solution: the Second Look Sentencing Act. The bill would allow individuals who have served at least 20 years to petition for a sentence reduction.
