Weekend Reading

Hi John,

All immigrants—whether recently arrived or long-established in our communities—should be treated with dignity and have their rights respected. Today, as politicians use fear to divide us and enact policies that separate families, AFSC is as committed as ever to working with communities for a more just and compassionate immigration system. We continue to provide direct support to immigrants while advocating for humane policies that respect their rights and dignity. Read more about our efforts from AFSC's Amy Gottlieb. [link removed]

TAKE ACTION

Tell Congress: Pass a budget that funds human needs, not corporate greed [link removed]

All people should have access to food, health care, and the resources they need to thrive. But recently, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on a budget measure that would harm people of all ages across the country. The measure would slash hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid, SNAP food assistance, and other human needs programs—while supporting $1.5 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy. Urge Congress to reject these cuts and pass a budget that prioritizes the well-being of all people over corporate profits!

IN THE MEDIA

Immigrant activist Jeanette Vizguerra reaches supporters from inside ICE detention [link removed]

Earlier this month, ICE forcibly detained Jeanette Vizguerra—a mother, immigration activist, and community leader in Colorado. AFSC and many across the country are demanding her release. We organized a vigil outside of the for-profit detention center where Jeanette has been locked up since March 17. During the event, she was able to call her daughter and send a message directly to the crowd. “This fight is not only for me but for everyone in the detention center,” she said. Read more. Michigan prison sentences are the nation’s longest. Bipartisan bills could fix that. [link removed]

Michigan’s average prison sentence length is about three times the national average. That has left the state with an aging prison population—and a rigid sentencing system that is costly and failing to adapt to modern realities. Today, Michigan has an opportunity to address this challenge through a pragmatic solution: the Second Look Sentencing Act. The bill would allow individuals who have served at least 20 years to petition for a sentence reduction. Read more from AFSC’s Peter Martel, University of Michigan Professor Jeffrey Morenoff, and researcher Noah Attal. (Times Herald)
