Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

It’s a big week in the Sports Capital. Yesterday, the Nationals kicked off their 20th season with Opening Day and they’ll continue their homestand through the weekend [ [link removed] ]. Over at Audi Field, the Spirit return to action tonight [ [link removed] ] and the Defenders kick off their season on Sunday [ [link removed] ]. Meanwhile, over at the Capital One Arena, the Capitals became the first NHL team to clinch a playoff spot, and Alex Ovechkin is just six goals away from breaking the all-time scoring record – and they’ll be back on the ice this Sunday [ [link removed] ]. This week also marked one year since we signed an agreement to transform the arena and keep the Wizards and Capitals in the Sports Capital.

We know why sports are so important to DC: they fuel our economy by creating jobs and supporting our local businesses, they keep us a premier entertainment destination, and they give us another reason to come together and cheer for DC.

As we head into this weekend of celebrating peak bloom [ [link removed] ] and cheering for DC, don’t forget that tomorrow is our Summer in the City [ [link removed] ] event at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. This annual expo makes it easier for families to choose the best summer options for your children and teens, connecting kids and families with summer learning programs, jobs, internships, and more.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

"Two weeks ago, after the Senate passed legislation that will allow the District Government to continue expending funds from our congressionally approved Fiscal Year 2025 local budget, I thanked the senators, residents, schoolchildren and friends of DC for making your voices heard. "

"Today, I am pleased that President Trump supports the House immediately passing the DC funding fix, as passed by the Senate, and I look forward to the House’s swift action. And with this fix, I look forward to sending a balanced and certified budget to the Council focused on our schools, a clean and safe DC, and a robust growth agenda. "

Reminder: As of January 2025, the Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) has taken over all animal care and control services for the District, and residents should reach out to them if you have animal-related concerns. In addition to reuniting lost pets with their families and finding loving homes for animals in need, BVSPCA now offers pet adoptions, pet health services, and opportunities to volunteer and/or foster.
