As Women’s History Month comes to a close, the Arizona AFL-CIO proudly recognizes Alana Billingsley, a fierce advocate for workers' rights and a dedicated union leader. Alana is a union flight attendant, base council representative for the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), a lifetime AFA-CWA member, a former AFL-CIO Tarrant County Central Labor Council delegate, and a newly appointed Maricopa Area Labor Federation (MALF) delegate following APFA’s recent affiliation with the Arizona AFL-CIO.
Her leadership was instrumental in organizing and mobilizing APFA members to achieve a 99.47% strike authorization vote in 2023, leading to the largest economic gains in American Airlines Flight Attendant history. She has inspired and mentored her fellow Flight Attendants, helping build a stronger, more engaged union.
Beyond her work in the airline industry, Alana continues to advocate for labor through her platform, Your Union Sister, using social media to spread awareness and Solidarity. She attributes her honesty, dedication, feminism, and Solidarity to one of her favorite heroes, her Great-Grandmother, Tillie Van Laar, a pioneering public servant whose dedication to her community shaped Alana’s commitment to unionism.

Take action to urge Congress to immediately call on the Trump Administration to reverse its decision to rescind the collective bargaining agreement for TSOS and to cosponsor and pass the Rights for the TSA Workforce Act (H.R. 2086 and S. 997). This legislation would give frontline TSOs the same workplace rights and protections afforded to other federal workers under Title 5 of the U.S. Code.

Arizona Needs Reliable Internet Service & Good Jobs
$42 billion in public funding for internet infrastructure is on the line, and we need your voice! While CWA members have fought for investments in reliable fiber broadband that create good, union jobs, satellite company CEOs are pushing to redirect these funds to unreliable satellite services. Satellite internet lacks the necessary speeds, employs fewer workers, and has a short lifespan that leads to repeated investments.
⤵️Click on the link below and tell Governor Hobbs and the Arizona State Broadband Office to stand up to pressure to redirect funds to unreliable satellite internet service and continue to create good, union jobs by investing in reliable, high-speed fiber internet. ⤵️

AZ AFL-CIO's Book Club: A New Chapter Begins!
We're back—and better than ever! The Arizona AFL-CIO Labor Book Club is now formatted as an end-of-the-month book review, offering fresh perspectives on thought-provoking reads that resonate with our movement.
📖This Month's Review: Sunset Park by Paul Auster
Check out this week's review, written by Esau Gutierrez for a deeper dive:
Sunset Park by Paul Auster hits close to home for working-class union members. Set during the fallout of the 2008 crash, it follows Miles Heller and a group of squatters trying to get by in an abandoned Brooklyn house. Everyone is dealing with instability, including lost jobs, medical bills, and broken families, and the book dives into things like housing insecurity and the emotional weight of economic stress.
Auster doesn’t get preachy, but the story naturally brings up things like the erosion of steady work and how people hold each other up when systems fail. There’s a quiet sense of solidarity in how these characters live and care for each other, even without a clear plan or ideology.
The writing is understated but honest, and it gives space to the struggles a lot of union folks will recognize. Sunset Park reminds us that dignity and connection can grow even in hard times.
