Dear Friends and Neighbors,

With important committee deadlines approaching, activity at the Capitol has been steadily increasing. This week has involved thorough discussions, collaboration, and preparation as we work toward the first and second deadlines next Friday. Efforts have been focused on reviewing legislation, coordinating with colleagues, and refining key policy proposals to ensure they are ready for consideration. As we move through these milestones, I will continue to provide updates, including on the third deadline the following week.

Governor Walz’s Budget

There has been growing concern over Governor Walz’s budget proposal and the revisions he has put forward. His recommendations include significant cuts to essential services, such as nursing homes and senior living facilities, schools, and programs that support vulnerable communities. These proposed reductions have sparked debate among lawmakers and citizens alike, as they come at a time when many Minnesotans are already facing economic hardship.

While Governor Walz has the platform to propose and discuss budget priorities, it is ultimately the responsibility of the Minnesota House and Senate to craft and approve the final budget. Once both chambers have reached an agreement, the governor has the authority to sign the budget into law. This process ensures that the legislature plays a crucial role in determining how taxpayer dollars are allocated and which programs receive funding. As budget negotiations continue, it remains to be seen how these proposed cuts will be addressed and whether bipartisan solutions can be reached to protect essential services.

Congratulations to former Senator Tom Bakk

I had the privilege of attending the meeting and dinner with the Iron Ore Alliance, a vital joint initiative between the United Steelworkers and U.S. Steel that supports and advocates for Minnesota’s mining industry. This event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the current state of iron ore mining, its economic impact, and the future of this crucial sector in our state.

Alongside my fellow Iron Range legislators, I had the opportunity to highlight the significance of mining operations in Minnesota and the hardworking men and women who keep this industry strong. We engaged in meaningful discussions about the challenges and opportunities facing the mining sector, from regulatory hurdles to workforce development and the importance of securing a stable and prosperous future for our communities.

A special moment during the evening was the recognition of former Senator Tom Bakk, who was honored with the Hard Rock Miners award for his decades of service and dedication to the Iron Range. With over 30 years in elected office, Senator Bakk has been a steadfast advocate for mining and a champion for the region’s economic growth. His deep knowledge and unwavering commitment to the Iron Range have left a lasting impact, and he is truly deserving of this recognition.

IRRRB Meeting

Representative Skraba, Vice Chair of the IRRRB, called a special meeting of the board to name a new Chair. Congratulations to Senator Farnsworth, who was named the new chair of the board, and we are confident in his leadership moving forward. We look forward to another member joining us after the special election at the end of April, which will bring the board back to full strength. I will update you when that happens.

Meeting with Steelworkers

After the IRRRB meeting, we had the opportunity to meet with the United Steelworkers, which included many local union workers and leaders. Our discussion focused on the recent layoffs at the HibTac and Minorca mines, a devastating situation that has impacted countless families across our region. We came together in solidarity to support the affected workers and ensure their voices are heard as we navigate this challenging time. This issue is not political, it is about standing up for our communities, protecting good-paying jobs, and advocating for the future of Minnesota’s mining industry. Now more than ever, we must work together to find solutions that provide stability and economic security for those who need it most.
