For decades, public lands have been protected under a
simple principle: these places are a part of America's heritage —
places meant to be protected, not plundered. From the majestic
glaciers and ancient trees of the Tongass Forest to the
sun-sculpted sandstone cliffs of Grand Staircase-Escalante, our
public lands are more than just breathtaking natural wonders —
they are vital to our climate, our wildlife, and our way of life.
But instead of preserving irreplaceable landscapes,
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is using a sweeping directive to
hand them over to polluters, putting millions of acres of
wilderness, fragile ecosystems, and culturally significant sites
at risk.
Put simply: it's a fire sale for corporate polluters.
And just last week, the administration announced its plans
to reopen vast stretches of Alaska's Arctic to fossil fuel
development, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and
the Western Arctic Reserve. These lands are home to polar bears,
caribou, snowy owls, and some of the most fragile ecosystems left
on Earth.
This is just the start. It's a signal that more land is on
the chopping block — and that the administration is willing to
fast-track its destruction to appease polluters.
