March is a time to celebrate and reflect on the women who have shaped our city, our nation, and the world. Throughout history, women’s voices have driven progress, and right here in Philadelphia, women have been vital in shaping both our history and our future.

As Philadelphia’s 100th mayor — and the first woman to hold this office — I carry with me the lessons and strength of the women who paved the way.

Women like Dr. Constance Clayton, who led Philadelphia’s public schools and taught us that education is the key to unlocking potential. Leaders like City Councilwoman Augusta “Gussie” Clark, who saw something in me to be nurtured when I was young and my mentor Marian Tasco who showed me what was possible. As well as the countless women who came before us — trailblazers like Roxanne Jones, C. Delores Tucker, and Anna Verna — who fought for progress long before I stepped into this role.

Women continue to lead in every corner of our city — from City Hall to classrooms, businesses, and beyond. Their impact is undeniable, and their work moves us forward.

This month and every month, let’s honor and celebrate the women who paved the way and recognize the work still ahead. Women’s history is not just about the past, John. It’s about lifting as we climb, continuing to break barriers, open doors, and lay a smooth path for the women behind us.

Happy Women’s History Month!
