Community Engagement – Iftar Event in Leicester
On Friday, 21st March, I had the pleasure of visiting Leicester for an iftar event, bringing together Muslim leaders and councillors from Derby, Nottingham, and Leicester. This event was an invaluable opportunity to discuss community cohesion, explore ways to collaborate, and strategise on how to move our region forward. It was a productive meeting, and I look forward to strengthening our partnerships across the region.
Eid-al-Fitr Celebrations
This Sunday marks Eid-al-Fitr, the end of the holy month of Ramadan. This is a time of joy, reflection, and community, where families and friends come together to celebrate. I would like to extend my warmest wishes to everyone in Nottingham celebrating this occasion – Eid Mubarak!
Council Progress and Financial Stability
I am pleased to report that following the Council’s Scrutiny and Improvement Board meeting on Wednesday, 26th March, we continue to make significant progress. Most of our 11 key programs remain on track, demonstrating our commitment to delivering positive outcomes for our community.
Furthermore, the recent approval of the five-year Council Plan, alongside the confirmation of the Council’s current financial stability, provides a strong foundation for our future work. Our goal remains clear – achieving full financial stability and a completely balanced budget by 2027/28.

Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) Discussions
Today, I held discussions with unions regarding the Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) and the proposals put forward by the City Council. This was a constructive and open conversation, ensuring that unions remain informed and engaged as the process moves forward. Post-May, I look forward to extending these discussions to our wider community, partners, businesses, and the voluntary sector, ensuring all voices are heard in shaping the future of local government in our region.

A new independent focus survey from Transport Focus has confirmed what residents and visitors to Nottingham know – that we have some of the best buses around. Â
Transport Focus are an independent organisation representing the interests of bus passengers. Bus passengers were surveyed throughout 2024 in almost 40 different regions on all aspects of their journey, including punctuality, value for money and the experience of disabled customers. Â
The 2024 results revealed that Nottingham buses received a very high satisfaction rating - 90% versus an average of 83% nationally.Â
Nottingham people who took part in the research also said their buses arrived on time, and they rated the frequency of services and the ease of use for disabled customers. Nottingham’s buses were also highly rated compared to the rest of England for cleanliness, comfort, safety and the updates and information given. Â
Nottingham City Council look after the infrastructure of bus stops and real time information displays, which was highly rated by passengers in the survey, as well as being a pioneer of dedicated bus lanes as well as priority at junctions and lights, contributing to bus punctuality. Â
Regional Bus Service Improvement Plans (BSIP), where the City Council and partners work continually to improve our bus network also play a big part in the continued success of our bus network, as well as the fact that Nottingham City Transport has been publicly owned since 1898.Â
Over 45 schemes have been completed so far across the city. Using £5.85 million investment from the Government’s Local Transport Plan, we are continuing with the Streets for People programme to improve roads/paths and make walking and cycling easier and safer.
The roads chosen for improvement have been put forward by local people and prioritised by councillors. The programme consists of standard road resurfacing and preventative maintenance to ensure the funds go as far as possible. The work for phase two of the Streets for People programme is on track to finish in September 2025.

Nottingham City Council is excited to announce the re-launch of e-scooters across the city. The e-scooters are now ready to use, joining the e-bikes already available to hire. Dott has been chosen to operate the e-scooter scheme in Nottingham, offering a greener travel option to help take cars off our roads and improve air quality. The striking blue and red e-scooters are approved by the Department for Transport (DfT) and are used in other UK cities such as Bristol and Milton Keynes.
Around 1300 e-scooters are available to hire from approximately 300 mandatory parking locations across the city.

Work has finished on phase one of the Active Travel England-funded improvements on Porchester Road in Mapperley.
Nottingham City Council were awarded over £1.7 million from the Active Travel Fund for investment along Porchester Road. This funding has enabled the council to deliver a modern pedestrian and cycling-friendly scheme, with clear segregation from traffic. To date, the council has built a segregated, two-way cycle path on Porchester Road – beginning at Burgass Road and finishing at Cherrywood Gardens. Phase two of the programme starts soon.

Here’s your March 2025 update on our progress on our project to build a new walking and cycling bridge over the Trent at Trent Basin.
- Clearance of vegetation has taken place on site, preparing the bank where the bridge will land
- Work has begun to demolish the warehouse which housed Flo Skate Park
- The footpath between the playparks at the Hook and the river, on the south side of the river, is now closed until late April while its being upgraded as part of the bridge project. The stone path will be replaced by a 3metre tarmac path – more details here. Thank you for using another route while we carry out this upgrade.
Nottingham has once again been awarded Purple Flag status by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) – marking the 15th consecutive year the city has been recognised for excellence in managing its evening, night-time and visitor economies.
The Purple Flag is a recognised accreditation that is only awarded to towns and cities where public and private sector organisations collaborate to offer visitors a safe, diverse, and vibrant nightlife.
Nottingham’s continued success reflects the strength of partnerships across the city, involving It’s in Nottingham – the city’s Business Improvement District (BID), funding partner – the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Violence Reduction Partnership (VRP), Nottinghamshire Police, Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Nottingham Trent University, the University of Nottingham, stakeholders and a range of local businesses.
