Friends -
Breonna Taylor would have turned 27 today.
Instead, the officers who murdered her nearly three months ago still have not been charged.
Breonna should still be alive, and the officers who murdered her should be held accountable.
When I look at Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Ahmaud Arbery, I see my family.
What happened to them could just have easily happened to the people I love. It’s a painful reality that Black people across our nation have to confront every single day.
That pain is being expressed in states from coast to coast right now. And like the Reverend Al Sharpton said, we are standing up in George, Ahmaud, and Breonna’s names and saying get your knee off our necks.
America is raw right now.
It’s raw because of the fact that in the history of our country, Black people have been treated as less than human.
It’s raw because we have never fully addressed the historic and systemic racism that has existed in our country.
America is raw right now, but it can be healed.
We will heal when our justice system works for every American, regardless of the color of your skin.
We will heal when we confront our nation’s history of systemic racism and use of excessive force.
We will heal when all Black lives matter — including the lives of Black trans women.
We will heal when we finally have justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery — and for those who came before and never got their justice.
Our healing will not happen overnight, but just know that I will always continue fighting for justice for the people.
So I hope you continue marching, continue making your voice heard, and continue fighting — because real change happens when we work together.
For the people,
Kamala
