"ON THE ROAD
WITH TONY..."
Welcome to our March newsletter, and Happy Spring as the weather starts to get a little warmer!
Now that it is officially Spring, the Macomb County Clerk's Office will see a considerable jump in marriage applications. Please see our feature below on how easy we have made it to apply for your marriage license.
March is also National Women's History Month, and we have spotlighted two legendary County Clerks -- Carmella Sabaugh and Edna Miller, who laid the groundwork for the present-day Clerk's Office.
In honor of National Reading Month, we visited several elementary schools in Macomb County where I read books like "Tooth Trouble" by Jane Clarke. This particular book is about promoting good dental health and the importance of visiting the dentist. We always enjoy visiting these schools and meeting some of our brightest educators and top students in the County.
Get ready for Spring and the approaching Opening Day for Tigers baseball. Go get 'em, Tigers!

*NATIONAL WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH*
"Legendary County Clerks Laid the Groundwork for Present-Day Office"
The Macomb County Clerk’s Office has a long history of great customer service and national recognition, a tradition that is very important to current County Clerk Forlini.
Much of the groundwork for the present-day Clerk's Office was laid by two notable County Clerks, Carmella Sabaugh and Edna Miller. In honor of National Women's History Month, here is a little information about Macomb County's legendary women Clerks.
Former County Clerk Carmella Sabaugh
Carmella Sabaugh served as County Clerk & Register of Deeds for 24 years after being elected to the post in 1992. Carmella’s legacy was proven by her many years of service and many technological break-throughs in election reporting, electronic filing, digital vital records, computerized scanning, and on-line searches and applications. She led the way for Clerks across the state to find innovative ways to do our clerk work.
Former County Clerk Edna Miller
Edna Miller served as County Clerk for 28 years after first being elected in 1964. Edna campaigned for the position after the sudden death of her husband, Arthur J. Miller, who served as County Clerk after his 1960 election. Edna was elected the first woman County Clerk in Macomb County and also introduced many modern services to the office, such as computerized election results. Kathy Smith, my Chief Deputy Clerk, who has served for over 40 years was originally hired by Edna Miller.
Previous modern-day County Clerks were Arthur J. Miller (1961-64), Albert A. Wagner (1953-60), A.H. Jim Hofstetter (1949-52) and Guy L. Brown (1941-48).

Clerk Forlini visited several Elementary Schools in Macomb County
In honor of National Reading Month, Clerk Forlini visited several Elementary Schools in Macomb County to read a book titled "Tooth Trouble" by Jane Clarke. The book is about promoting good dental health and the importance of visiting the dentist.
On Thursday, March 6th the Clerk read to Mrs. Wochaski’s second-grade class at Cherokee Elementary School in Clinton Township.
Clerk Forlini also visited Pleasantview Elementary in Eastpointe and read to Mrs. Ferzo's and Mrs. Castelow’s fourth-grade classes. Also pictured is Mrs. Cynthia Williams-Sandoval, the District Librarian for the Eastpointe Community Schools.

Later in the month, Clerk Forlini went to Schwarzkoff Elementary in Sterling Heights and read to Ms. Najor’s second grade classroom. The kids were ecstatic to hear the story of "Wilbur the Walrus" and get their goodies-- toothbrushes and brushing/reading charts! Clerk Forlini reminded the kids through his reading that the kids should brush twice daily and read for at least 20 minutes!

*IT'S NOW EASIER THAN EVER TO APPLY*
"Springtime Means Wedding Season"
"for Macomb County Clerk's Office"
Apply for a Marriage License [ [link removed] ]
Now that it is officially Spring, the Macomb County Clerk's Office will see a considerable jump in marriage applications.
Clerk Forlini has made it easy for prospective wedding couples to fill out and file their marriage applications and encourages all applicants to use the convenient on-line form to enter all their information before they visit the Clerk's Office. This will save time and ensure that all the required info is submitted.
When applying in Macomb County, at least one applicant needs to be a Macomb County resident with proof of residency (current driver's license or State ID). After the online form is submitted, couples can then make an appointment to visit the Clerk's office by clicking on this link [ [link removed] ].
During the appointment, only one applicant needs to be present (but that applicant must be a Macomb County resident). A completed affidavit will be waiting for the applicants, and the affidavit will be notarized at that time. Then payment can be made and the couple will receive two copies of their marriage license.
A couple of tips: Applicants must make sure they apply 33 days or less before their wedding date. There is a three-day waiting period from date of application, but applicants can waive the three-day waiting period by paying a $10 waiver fee. Also, when filling out the online application, it is best to have copies of the applicants' birth records to help identify required information (like birthplaces of parents).

"Joyce Aragona Appointed as Republican Member of the Board of Canvassers"
Joyce Aragona
Congratulations to our newest Republican member of the Macomb County Board of Canvassers, Joyce Aragona. Joyce will serve as one of the Republican representatives with Chairperson Nancy Tiseo. Democratic Board members include Vice Chair Alysa Diebolt and Sarah Stovall.
The Board is responsible for reviewing and analyzing the results of all elections to determine who has been nominated or elected. After the general election, the board delivers certificates of election to the County Clerk. The board also conducts recounts of certain offices.
Ms. Aragona replaces former Board member Lori Mabee, who served since Nov. 1, 2019. Lori was a cornerstone of the Board of Canvassers and will be sorely missed. Thank you, for your many years of dedicated service!

"SE Michigan Chamber of Commerce Event"
New Baltimore Mayor Tom Semaan
At the SE Michigan Chamber of Commerce event, New Baltimore Mayor Tom Semaan got the chance at holding this white snake, which reminded me of the snake that portrayed the devil in the movie “The Passion.” The snake was brought to the monthly event by Melisa Sweet from the LegaSea Reptarium of the City of Utica.
Also, I need to recognize Flo Hayman. Flo was recognized alongside Harvey Curley for their lifelong commitment as elected officials. Thank you for your service!
