After Gary experienced the impact of delivering summer meals to kids who needed them, he left his 25-year career behind to work at his local food bank full time. Now, he spends every day making an impact for kids in his rural community — where access to food is harder to come by for families.

A few years ago, thanks to advocacy efforts fueled by supporters like you, the government implemented new flexibilities for summer meals programs in rural areas. Now, Gary’s food bank is able to distribute a week’s worth of meals to families with children. Before this change, children were required to eat each meal on site — which kept many families from making the trip to meal distribution centers.

The increase in meals served has been exponential. In 2021, they served 11,000 meals to kids during the summer. By 2024, this number was up to 36,000 meals. And with our help, Gary’s team is currently making preparations to distribute even more this summer.
