On March 24, a powerful new mural was unveiled in Washington, DC. It honors Joaquin Oliver — one of the 17 lives stolen in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
But this isn’t just a tribute. It’s a warning. A rallying cry. A refusal to forget. Painted by renowned artist Shepard Fairey and Joaquin’s own father, Manny Oliver, this mural lives at the heart of our nation’s capital. It’s part of the work of Change the Ref, the organization Joaquin’s family created to carry his voice — and his fight — forward. Fairey’s own daughter is 17 — the same age Joaquin was when his life was taken. For him, for us, and for so many others, this is personal.
