Dear John,

Electorate Boundary Changes for Election 2026
The Electoral Commission has announced that the review of the boundaries of electorates in New Zealand for the General Election in 2026, has begun.
The Review is done by the independent Representation Commission made up of public officials and Government and opposition appointed people.

The proposed new boundaries were released on Tuesday this week.

The proposed changes for my electorate of Papakura are being made on the basis that current numbers in the electorate are being reduced to allow for population growth in areas like Drury.

It is proposed that Papakura will include a small part of Airfield Road – Walters Road including Bruce Pulman Park and Kauri Flats which are currently in the Takanini electorate.

It is also proposed that Beachlands-Maraetai is going to become part of Botany, so quite a large land area and new population growth area change, there.
The details are on[[link removed]]( [link removed])

The general public have until 27 April 2025 to make submissions using the website below:

You can have your say which can include objecting to or supporting other submissions in writing. Alternatively, you can attend public hearings which will occur during the consultation period which lasts until 18 June 2025.

Free Trade Agreement with India
New Zealand and India have officially kicked off negotiations for a Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This is a huge step forward in strengthening our economic partnership with India and our Prime Minister Christopher Luxon spent a number of days in talks with his counterpart Prime Minister Modi, while visiting India last week.

Hon Todd McClay has also been fully involved in these important negotiations as he has been to India five times since becoming the Trade and Investment Minister. He sees that a closer economic relationship with India which is a country of 1.4 billion people, will be a massive opportunity for New Zealand exporters.
It will greatly help the Government to achieve our goal of doubling exports in the next ten years. That means more jobs, higher incomes, and a reduced cost of living for Kiwi families.

Minister Todd McClay has launched a public consultation on New Zealand and India’s negotiations for a formal comprehensive Free Trade Agreement.
For more information, including on how you can make a submission, please go to [[link removed]]( [link removed] )before 15 April 2025.

I am also interested in the opportunities to strengthen our mutual interests in defence and security with India as well as cooperating  in sports and cultural exchanges that will foster people-to-people connections.

In my electorate of Papakura, I enjoy attending many events that Indian Kiwis host like the Indian Games, the Indian NewsLink Business Awards and other festivals and celebrations for the Sikh, Hindhu and Buddhist communities, where possible.
I also acknowledge the contribution that our Indian Kiwis  who call New Zealand home, make to our community with their positive work ethic and strong sense of social responsibility that includes being well represented in our Defence Forces and the New Zealand Police.

Increases in MSD Payment Rates
There is good news from the Public Service for more than 900,000 superannuitants and nearly 5,000 veterans who will receive a 2 to 3 per cent boost in their pension payments to help with their living costs from 1 April 2025.

Payments from the Ministry of Social development to the almost 600,000 beneficiaries, students and families receiving government support, will also increase by 2 to 3 per cent from 1 April 2025.  This will help everyone especially families, with everyday costs like groceries, rent and utilities bills. The usual increases to benefits due to inflation will continue.

In addition, the Government’s FamilyBoost initiative to help with the cost of early childhood education is going well and to date has put $31.8 million back into low and middle income families’ pockets. Every family with young children in ECE should check their eligibility.

These benefit changes are a positive part of our Government’s ongoing efforts to support New Zealanders to live healthily, productively and hopefully.

All the best,

Judith
