Brad Lander for NYC Mayor

John, this is a longer email than usual, but it’s about reproductive health care, so I hope you’ll read it.

Here in New York, we have a long history of protecting reproductive freedom. We were one of the first states to decriminalize abortion, long before Roe v. Wade. And in this past election, 78% of New Yorkers voted to enshrine the right to abortion in our state constitution. That was a landslide victory that makes crystal clear where New Yorkers stand. Still, the Trump administration is now threatening to withdraw FDA approval for mifepristone, to ban contraception, to punish reproductive health care providers, and to eliminate sex education.

Over in the Comptroller's Office we've long been ringing the alarm bell – convening city leaders just a week after Trump was elected, and calling on pharmacy giants like Walmart, Costco, and Kroger to continue selling mifepristone.

John, you deserve a mayor who will staunchly defend the right to abortion, who will shield our health care providers against unconstitutional attacks, and make New York City a beacon for reproductive freedom.

So today alongside Meg, reproductive justice group BKForge, and other activists and supporters, I proudly unveiled my plan to protect reproductive rights when I am the Mayor of New York City.

Here are some ways my administration will fight the MAGA effort to deny women reproductive freedom:

  • Ensure New Yorkers have access to safe, effective abortion care if the federal government limits or withdraws the “abortion pill”
  • Develop an independent authority to oversee and manage all essential reproductive services provided by public agencies
  • Rally support and demand accountability for stronger legal protections safeguarding New Yorkers' personal health information from harassment, denial of service, or prosecution
  • Organize Mayors to build a nationwide coalition and build a pipeline of abortion providers for NYC and beyond
  • Support even stronger shield laws for New York providers serving clients in states with abortion bans
  • Protect patients from harassment and ensure ER care
  • Provide targeted support for folks traveling from states where abortions are banned
  • Double the number of people the New York Abortion Access Hub serves to 15,000
  • Demand that pharmacies ensure emergency contraception is available and that pharmacists provide contraception without a prescription
  • Fight to restore NYS Article 6 funds for primary care including abortion, which Andrew Cuomo slashed
  • Lead the fight for increased Medicaid reimbursement rates in line with actual costs
  • Ensure every CUNY campus provides emergency and over the counter contraception in easy-to-access vending machines
  • Work with the Department of Education to strengthen sex education requirements in middle and high schools
  • Launch a public information campaign on contraception and insurance coverage options

John, these are all tactics the Mayor could be deploying right now to protect against Trump's attacks on reproductive freedoms – but is not. Unfortunately, Mayor Adams is too busy protecting his pardon from Donald Trump. And we definitely can't trust serial sexual harasser Andrew Cuomo to defend reproductive rights or gender equity.

When I'm Mayor, we'll use all our power to make New York City a haven for reproductive rights and a beacon for gender equity. Let’s be a city where girls and women know they are fully equal human beings, where they are able to flourish and live free and full lives.

Thank you,

Brad
