Seattle Democratic Socialists of America

Join the protests against police violence—we’re out here every day! Check out our upcoming events: an Afrosocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus meeting today and New Member Orientation tomorrow! See below for more information.

DeFUND SPD! Seattle DSA fights alongside and as part of the movement to:

  1. Defund SPD

  2. Invest instead in communities; fight austerity

  3. Release those detained; do not prosecute protesters

  4. Cut all ties in schools and workplaces with SPD

We know: there is no capitalism without racist policing. We need community-led health and safety initiatives, affordable housing, free childcare, and more.

EVERY DAY: the occupation of the East Precinct by Cal Anderson Park in Capitol Hill!

We encourage all members who are able to come to daily protests—please stay safe, wear masks, bring hand sanitizer, and stay home if you’re feeling sick! There are plenty of ways to support if you can’t make it out. We’ll coordinate all of this on Slack! (Not on Slack yet? Send your welcome email from Maria Svart to [email protected] and we’ll get you plugged in!)

Daily protests have become daily occupation in the streets!

On Wednesday, 10,000 people protested from early afternoon until long after dark, chanting “Defund SPD,” “I Can’t Breathe,” “Jenny Durkan’s Got to Go,” and calling on the police and National Guard to take off their riot gear.

When the march arrived at City Hall, Mayor Jenny Durkan was forced to meet with Nikkita Oliver, who livestreamed her meeting as she made the demands of the movement to Durkan, while thousands upon thousands of protesters listened from speakers and their phones on the streets below. Mayor Durkan’s empty words were met with boos and chants of “Nikkita for Mayor!” This militant protest of multiracial, young working-class people pressured Durkan to lift the curfew and to withdraw the motion to try to end the federal oversight of the SPD.

The daily standoff with the SPD at the East Precinct, right next to Cal Anderson park, continues. It has become a de-facto occupation of the streets! As one DSA member put it: “We’re seeing a perfect storm of years of anger at the racist police system, a collective disorientation after months of quarantine, 100,000 deaths, and mass unemployment like we’ve never seen in our lives -- and a spark that lit the tinder box.”

The demands are clear: we won’t stand down until we defund SPD and invest instead in our communities.
