The world is watching the United States at this moment of reckoning. We must confront the wrongs of our past, and make the choices necessary to ensure police accountability and root out systemic racism in all its forms.
The protests around the country are calling for those important changes. Instead of confronting the truth, Trump is calling out the military in Washington D.C. and calling for the militarization of local police. In fact, he recently reinstated the Pentagon program that allows police to gain access to weapons of war. Police departments do not need tanks. They do not need weapons uniquely designed for battlefields. What they do need is reform and de-escalation training.
Add your name to join me in support of Senator Brian Schatz’s proposal to amend the National Defense Reauthorization Act to end the transfer of military equipment to police departments!
Trump's decision yesterday to post a letter calling protestors near LaFayette Park "terrorists" was the latest new low for this White House. Their willingness to openly attack and seek to delegitimize our constitutional rights to peacefully assemble place them squarely in opposition to the values that make our society free and democratic.
Together we must oppose these efforts to pit Americans against each other and work to transform the relationship between the police and many of our communities.
That’s why I’m supporting my colleague Brian Schatz in amending the National Defense Authorization Act to end the transfer of military equipment to local police forces. Sign your name to stand with us against excessive use of force by police and for demilitarization of our streets.
Thank you for standing up for what’s right,
Chris
