U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) held what may be the most important congressional hearing of 2025 — an investigation into “The Censorship Industrial Complex.”
The hearing is the first serious attempt by Congress to unravel the network of left-wing NGOs, woke corporations, and the Deep State trying to destroy the First Amendment.
This issue is close to Schmitt’s heart. When he was Attorney General of Missouri, he led a groundbreaking lawsuit that exposed one part of the “vast censorship enterprise,” including the Biden Administration and social media companies.
At the hearing, Schmitt, now chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution, called this “enterprise” what it is: “a shadow state.”
Schmitt detailed how the Biden Administration, Big Tech, and left-wing activists weaponized social media platforms to silence critics, manipulate public narratives, and promote false propaganda.
The Russia hoax. Covid’s origins. Hunter Biden’s laptop. The FBI’s targeting of parents and Christians. In story after story, on issue after issue — the Deep State and woke corporations declared war on Americans’ freedom of speech.
Schmitt’s first witness was Mollie Hemingway, the superstar editor-in-chief of The Federalist.
He also invited law Professor Jonathan Turley, who painstakingly detailed how the Biden censorship regime worked — the methods and organizations involved.
