Senator Tim Scott Says Solution to Racism

Senator Tim Scott Says Solution to Racism and Riots are Prayer and Change of Heart

By: Jim Daly

In the aftermath of George Floyd’s tragic death and multiple days of rioting and looting across America, I could think of no better person to join us on the Focus on the Family Broadcast today than my friend Senator Tim Scott (R-SC).

I’ve long felt a special connection with South Carolina’s junior senator, but not only because he is a fellow believer in Christ. We have something else in common. Growing up poor in the Palmetto State, Tim Scott never had a father in his life. His mom struggled to make ends meet, and the family moved around just to survive.

Like with my high school football coach, who took me under his wing, Senator Scott met a mentor who was a difference maker in ways large and small. After graduating from college, the Charleston native opened an insurance business before going into real estate. It’s an inspiring story of hard work, the positive influence of good friends – and an abiding Christian faith.

On today’s program, you’ll hear Senator Scott talk about his own faith journey as he shares about the centrality of Christ in his life.

Retired Police Captain David Dorn Killed by Rioters
Retired Police Captain David Dorn Killed by Rioters in St. Louis
By: Glenn Stanton

Another black man has died senselessly in the streets of a major city.

Retired St. Louis police chief David Dorn was shot and killed around 2:30 last night on that city’s Dr. Martin Luther King Drive.

aptain Dorn was shot by looters who were robbing his friend’s pawnshop, which he was helping protect from the violence that has plagued that city. He died in his own blood on the sidewalk. Dorn was a husband, father and grandfather, serving the people of St. Louis for 38 years as an officer.

The Ethical Society of Police, an organization founded in 1972 representing black officers and working to stop race-based discrimination in St. Louis, mourned Dorn as “the type of brother that would’ve given his life to save them if he had to.” On Twitter, they explained how dedicated he was to his community,

“To put into context how much Captain Dorn believed in being a part of the neighborhoods he once policed in, we would often see him walking his dog in North St. Louis or shopping at a store nearby. Most current and retired officers leave the city as soon as they can.”

Randy Feenstra Beats Nine Term Incumbent
Randy Feenstra Beats Nine Term Incumbent Steve King in Iowa Republican Congressional Primary
By: Bruce Hausknecht

Representative Steve King, R-Iowa, who has served nine terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from a conservative district in northwest Iowa, was defeated Tuesday in the Republican primary by state senator Randy Feenstra. In a 5-way race, Feenstra garnered almost 46% of the vote compared to King’s 36%.

King, a conservative on issues such as abortion, marriage and illegal immigration, was also heavily criticized on both sides of the political aisle for his extreme, sometimes bizarre comments to the press and on social media.

For example, in explaining his views on why there should be no exceptions for rape or incest as part of a law banning abortion, King said this last year:

“What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that? Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages that happened throughout all these different nations, I know that I can’t say that I was not a part of a product of that.”

Kentucky Ban on Second Trimester Abortions
Kentucky Ban on Second Trimester Abortions Struck Down by the Courts
By: Brittany Raymer

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently struck down Kentucky’s ban on dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortions when the abortionist completes the procedure by dismembering a living, preborn baby.

In 2018, Kentucky’s legislature passed House Bill 454 under the leadership of former Governor Matt Bevin. The bill banned D&E abortion, which is usually performed between 13-24 weeks of pregnancy.

As Gov. Bevin explained in a statement made last year, “HB 454 does not prohibit dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortions. However, it does ban the type of D&E abortion procedure that causes fetal death through the process of live dismemberment. The graphic procedure involves the use of forceps to forcibly rip the unborn living child apart piece by piece, usually resulting in the unborn bleeding to death during the dismemberment process.

President Trump Sparks Controversy

Yesterday, President Donald Trump held a brief press conference from the Rose Garden at the White House. He stated that he was a “law and order” president, and that the riots that America has been gripped with over the past week would be ended “now.”

If state governors failed to act and were unable to quell the protests, the president announced that he would use his authority as commander-in-chief by sending in the United States military to end the violent riots.

Concluding his remarks, the president surprised reporters and the nation as he said, “Thank you very much, and now I am going to pay my respects to a very, very special place.”
