Dear Friend,
It was a punch in the gut to learn this week that that convicted dogfighter and former NFL player LeShon Johnson was at it again.
The Department of Justice arrested him for operating a major dogfighting network, noting that Johnson “contributed to the growth of the dogfighting industry” with his raising hundreds of dogs for fighting and selling them to others in this underworld. The government seized 190 pit bull-type dogs seized from his properties in eastern Oklahoma, perhaps the largest-ever seizure of fighting dogs in a federal case.
You have thought that dogfighters, especially former NFL players, would have learned from Michael Vick’s experience. Public shaming, incarceration, public apologies, civic engagement.
But the DOJ indictment reminds us of the details of the dogfighting world: “rape stands,” “break sticks,” bloodlines, treadmills, Grand Champions, and so many other features of this organized crime network.
The DOJ did the right thing in arresting Johnson. But Johnson himself was dealing with dozens or hundreds of other dogfighters. And they are just a subset of the thousands of people who call this a passion, hobby, or business. In addition to the dogfighters, there are tens of thousands of cockfighters. And countless others committing acts of unapologetic, depraved cruelty.
That’s why we need your help to pass the Animal Cruelty Enforcement Act, legislation that would add capacity to enforce our national anti-cruelty laws. The ACE Act would create a dedicated Animal Cruelty Crimes section at the Department of Justice, helping ensure that federal laws protecting animals are enforced and that the LeShon Johnsons of the world cannot continue their terror.
