John, a recent Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request has finally shed some light on exactly which grants the EPA has reneged on – and we wanted to let you know what we’ve found out.
Some of the intended funding recipients didn’t even know their grants were cancelled until this FOIA request came to light. It appears that Lee Zeldin’s EPA was just planning to surprise them and leave them no time for any contingency planning.
But wait, there’s more!
This administration can’t even get its numbers right when it’s allegedly focused on “saving taxpayer dollars.” For example, the EPA announced that it was cancelling a $50 million grant to the Climate Justice Alliance, but the FOIA request showed that the grant was only… $12 million.
All of these numbers add up to one thing: a hot mess. These are just a few of the grants that have been cancelled:
$12 million for the Climate Justice Alliance in California
$11 million for the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice in Louisiana
$8 million for the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative in Maryland
$2.5 million for the West Virginia University Research Corporation
Nearly half of the cancelled grants are related to environmental justice initiatives. That’s no surprise to us, as Trump’s animus toward marginalized communities means that he wants his lackeys like Administrator Lee Zeldin to double down on the disadvantages that marginalized communities already face. The cruelty is the point.
