When you hear of journalists being pepper-sprayed and tear-gassed, television reporters being arrested live on air and their equipment smashed, your thoughts would usually turn to some of the world’s authoritarian regimes. But in the weird world of 2020, this is happening now in the streets of Minneapolis, LA, Louisville, New York and Washington DC.

Our partners at US Press Freedom Tracker ([link removed]) have reported on more than 300 press freedom violations ([link removed]) in the past week since the killing of George Floyd. That tally is more than double the figure for the whole of 2019 – a truly shocking statistic. In so many ways, the word of the year for 2020 will certainly be “unprecedented”.

Editor-in-chief Rachael Jolley says, “We are alarmed at the ferocity of some of the attacks on media freedom we are seeing being unveiled in the USA right now. In some states journalists are threatened with prison sentences, in others we are seeing physical attacks. The right to report is at the heart of US democracy, but this is now being threatened across the country. We call on the all those who represent the US, and believe in media freedom, to speak out on its importance."

This week, we have published a detailed new report ([link removed]) on the laws being used across Europe to stop investigative journalism being published or broadcast. This exclusive research looks in detail at which laws are being used to silence the media across the EU, Norway and the UK and will form part of a comprehensive body of research to help journalists fight this insidious threat to their work, and alert the public to what is going on.
