Free speech is not a crime, John.
John,
Earlier this month, agents from ICE arrested Mahmoud Khalil — a Columbia University graduate student, lawful permanent resident, and a forceful advocate for Palestinian rights. Now, the government is trying to revoke his legal status to deport him.
His crime? Speaking out against the government.
Khalil’s detention is the most brazen attempt by the Trump administration to punish those who have championed the Palestinian cause. And it likely won’t be the last.
John, this case goes beyond Palestinian activism. It’s a blatant attack on free speech and civil liberties — the bedrock of a healthy democracy. Moreover, it’s a warning sign for everyone who dares to challenge this administration.
Suppressing free speech is step one in the authoritarian playbook. Whether it’s imprisoning journalists, shutting down opposition organizations, or in this case targeting student activists, the goal remains the same: to silence those who challenge authority and create a climate of fear that will make people afraid to speak up.
None of this is normal, and we won’t idly sit back and allow Trump and the MAGA GOP to erode our right to free speech.
If you agree, can you add your name to our petition to demand Khalil’s release and send a message to the far-right that we will NOT tolerate any efforts to criminalize free speech?
