Dear John,

Action on climate breakdown couldn't be more urgent. So it might come as a surprise to hear we're not upset about the government delaying its new climate plan. A delay that the High Court agreed to this week. And that we actually supported.

The court had set a May deadline after our legal win last year. However, given the importance of getting the plan right and the short time the government has been in office, we believe a bit more time is justified – as long as the plan hits the targets it's legally obliged to. Client Earth, our co-claimants, agree.

More time means the government will have no excuses – this plan must be up to scratch because time is running out. So if you haven't yet, please demand it publishes a bold, fair climate plan in October.

Good news for bees

Last week we heard that ministers from across the UK have issued an Action Plan on pesticides – something we've been campaigning on for years.

It's not a perfect plan but it is a start. Bees are still going to need a helping hand from all of us. To get you going, here are our top tips for gardening for bees.

But troubling times for nature protection?

To be honest, the pesticide Action Plan came as a it of a surprise. Because so far in 2025 the UK government has adopted an anti-nature stance – with bats, newts and vital nature protections taking a battering for supposedly holding back the economy.

We're proud to say that thousands of you have already stepped up to support nature and wildlife. There's still time to stop the threats posed by the government's Planning and Infrastructure Bill.

Protesters' sentences reduced

In an important legal victory, the length of jail sentences for 6 Just Stop Oil activists have been ruled unlawful.

We're proud to have intervened in this critical appeal over the right to protest and supported the 16 activists in their pursuit of justice, alongside Greenpeace UK. And we're pleased that some of the activists’ sentences have been reduced, and the rules on sentencing  improved for non-violent activists. That's good news for all who engage in peaceful protest, whether against fossil fuels or in solidarity with Palestine.

But ultimately more needs to be done: we don't believe that peaceful protest about the climate crisis should result in jail time.

Fairness matters

On the subject of what's fair, thanks to over 8,000 of you who took our survey about making the government's upcoming climate plan fair.

If you haven't filled it in yet, now's your chance. Here's the first question:

Do you agree that those most responsible for contributing to the climate crisis should cover more of the cost to reduce carbon emissions?

200,000 against gold mine expansion

Together with campaigning group Ekō’s supporters, almost 200,000 of us demanded a halt to gold mine expansion in North Sumatra’s Batang Toru rainforest – home to the world's rarest orangutan.

We delivered our petition to the HQ of the mine's owners in the UK. And our sister organisation WALHI (Friends of the Earth Indonesia) and forests NGO Satya Bumi delivered it to key government ministries in Indonesia.
