Hey Team –
It’s not just you: Seemingly every day, there are new stories about terrifying detainments and deportations happening across the country – not just for undocumented immigrants but for permanent residents, [1] visa holders, and even tourists. Many of these arrests are being made under the guise that these individuals hold “views that the government believes threaten national security and undermine foreign policy,” [2] – oftentimes, ideas protected by the First Amendment.
How does the government know the intricate details of our opinions? Through government contracts with data brokers who surveil and sell our online data, which “bypass privacy safeguards and violate the Fourth Amendment.” [3] But across the country, state leaders have the power to pass laws that stop Big Tech from gathering our data or handing it over to the government. And we have the power to ensure those laws get passed and become an expectation for all states. Donate now to help fuel the fight for digital safety from mass surveillance and targeting.
DONATE NOW
Whether it’s a Palestinian permanent resident whose green card was revoked because of his free speech, or a French scientist who was denied entry into the US because of his stance on Trump’s science policy, [5] it’s clear that the Department of Homeland Security is taking excessive measures to monitor not only our actions in real life but what we say and do digitally.
When Big Tech backs the Administration's authoritarian actions, we can’t guarantee any of us are safe. We need lawmakers to act NOW to stop this surveillance state
. Facing Big Tech, we're up against the richest and most powerful people who also have total control of our data – drive our dismantling of mass surveillance and donate today.
In solidarity,
