Dear John,

George Floyd was unjustly killed by police on May 25. He was a beloved father, brother, partner, and son. He excelled at football, enjoyed making music, and loved his family dearly.

Words cannot fully express my sadness and horror at his death. I extend my deepest condolences to the Floyd family and to his beloved community.

Unfortunately, George Floyd was only one of many recent unjust killings of African Americans. I extend my prayers to the families of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Sean Reed, and to all African Americans who see themselves in these stories.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a hero. His non-violent approach to civil rights inspired me to engage in public service. I was blessed to meet him during my time as a student at Morehouse College, and humbled to have sung at his funeral with the Morehouse College's Glee Club.

I firmly believe that the color of one’s skin should never determine one's fate.

There is obviously still much work to be done. Time and time again, African Americans are unjustifiably killed by police brutality and systemic racism. It is clear that our country harbors racial wounds that have never healed, and that reform is desperately needed. Minority communities and law enforcement can and should work on the same side – the side of peace, safety, respect, and justice.

Change can happen in peaceful protest, online advocacy, and at the ballot box. It is more important than ever that we have our voices heard.

I continue to fight for civil rights every day in Congress, and I do it knowing that the legacy of the 1960s lives on in me. Now, as a senior member of the Congressional Black Caucus, I am proud to recognize the next generation of African American leaders as my colleagues.

As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

May we continue to battle injustice, may the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God bless you.

Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr.
