When a client or their family member passes away, it can change their tax filing situation and needs.
The Minnesota Department of Revenue has many resources to help you file for deceased taxpayers.
- Guidance for filing final returns for a deceased client or family member:
- If a client died during active service in the armed forces, they may qualify for tax relief. For details, visit our Tax Relief for Deceased Active-Duty Military page.
- If a client is claiming a refund on behalf of a deceased taxpayer, they must complete Form M23, Claim for a Refund for a Deceased Taxpayer.
-
New! Beginning with tax year 2024, the rent credit for a deceased taxpayer may now be claimed by someone other than their spouse or dependent. This is valuable information to share with your clients.
