Ilhan Omar’s American Dream Is Strong Enough for These Times
[[link removed]]
After four years living in a Kenyan refugee camp, where they had fled from the violence and oppression that had erupted in their native Somalia, members of the Omar family considered their options for making a new life in a distant land. Somali refugees were being resettled around the world in the mid-1990s, and the family had opportunities to go to Norway or perhaps another Scandinavian country, or to Canada. But the grandfather had other ideas. “He wanted to come to the United States because, he said, the United States is where you can eventually become American,” recalled his granddaughter decades later. “As somebody who was born into colonized Somalia, and lived through dictatorship, and never really got to fully experience democracy, he was very eager to live in what he called ‘a true democracy.’”
So it was that the immigration process began. The grandfather and granddaughter watched westerns featuring Clint Eastwood, and eventually traveled to Nairobi to view glossy travel films that featured images of an America with white-picket fences and happy children boarding school buses. Paperwork was completed. Plane reservations were made and, in March of 1995, 12-year-old Ilhan Abdullahi Omar arrived in the United States.
On the 30th anniversary of her arrival, Omar is one of the most well-recognized elected officials in her adopted country—a member of Congress who celebrates the rights outlined in the US Constitution with a level of knowledge and enthusiasm that few of her colleagues can muster.

Candidates announce campaigns for Justin Eichorn's vacant Minnesota Senate seat
[[link removed]]
After a Minnesota state senator resigned over accusations he sought sex from a minor, candidates are announcing their intentions to run for his vacant seat.
Republican Justin Eichorn held the Senate seat in District 6 before his resignation, which came just before a scheduled vote on his expulsion. He faces a federal charge of attempted coercion or enticement of a minor. A criminal complaint alleges he arranged to meet and have sex with someone he thought was a 17-year-old girl, but who was actually an undercover officer.
WCCO has learned Gov. Tim Walz is expected to issue a writ of special election for Eichorn's seat on Tuesday. There are different rules under state law when there is a vacancy during the legislative session to ensure constituents in the district are represented. The statute says the special election must be held as soon as possible, but with at least a week's notice for a special primary and 14 days' notice of the special election.
That means a new senator could be seated as early as the middle or latter part of April. The Legislature must adjourn by May 19.
