Dear John,
Right now, Republican leadership are demanding that their members stop holding in-person town halls to avoid hearing concerns from everyday Americans about the out-of-control Trump Administration.
But here at the California Democratic Party, that isn’t our style.
Last week, we held a town hall meeting in one of the most vulnerable Republican-held districts in our state — currently represented by Republican Rep. David Valadao.
And while I was honored to give some brief opening remarks, I wasn’t there to preach. I was there to listen. And here’s what I heard:
[link removed] [[link removed]] Congressman Jimmy Gomez, CADEM Chair Rusty Hicks, CA Assemblymember Dr. Jasmeet BainsCarter , a high school student, is concerned about the future of education for himself and his peers:
“The issue is if we start debilitating the Department of Education, we’re taking away things like Perkins funding and McKinney-Vinco funding. I’m looking at my peers who may not even have a roof over their heads, and are sleeping in cars and struggling to do their schoolwork — why is it that on top of this they have to look at the leader of the free world telling them he doesn't give a damn about them?”
Sandy is worried about the future of Medicaid, especially since cuts to the program are a key component to funding Donald Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires:
“We can’t allow Medicaid cuts to prevail because this is life and death. 67% of our people in Valadao’s constituency are on Medicaid. Politicians have a duty to us, to represent us. They say that health and safety is a priority. How can they justify cutting Medicaid?”
Farmers are the backbone of California, and Roman is concerned about how they will fare given all the economic uncertainty, the chaotic “off again, on again” tariffs, and threats to healthcare:
“Kern County is the 3rd largest producer of agriculture in the country. The barriers that exist for farmworkers to access health are immense. I think that the message I’d like to say is that the crises that our society goes through, farmworkers experience every single one of them. They suffer disproportionately.”
And we heard so much more. Everyday Californians shared their fears about Republicans’ proposed cuts to the Social Security Administration, shutting down field offices, taking the phones off the hook, and slashing critical services for seniors and working families.

The Democratic Party doesn’t have a magic wand to stop Trump and fix these problems overnight. But we will *never* stop listening to your fears and concerns and we will *never* stop fighting for YOU .
While GOP politicians hide from their constituents, California Democrats are showing up, listening, and fighting to protect the programs Americans rely on. That’s what it means to be California Strong and to be in this fight for the next four years and beyond.
We are hoping to launch more town halls across the state to hold the GOP’s feet to the fire. Will you consider making a donation of $ or $ to help power our grassroots movement to every corner of California and make swing district Republicans regret supporting Trump’s Medicaid cuts?
