☪️ Ramadan Mubarak, John. I'm Madiha Raza with the IRC. I cover conflict and crisis throughout the Middle East and across Africa.
Throughout this holy month, I've been joining millions of Muslims around the world in observing Ramadan. During this time, we abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours. It is a chance to refocus our minds, take stock of our blessings, and give back to those less fortunate in our communities.
But abstaining from food isn't always done by choice. More than 1 million people in Gaza—half of the entire population—are experiencing catastrophic food insecurity and are at increased risk of acute malnutrition and death.
URGENT: Renewed reported airstrikes follow more than three weeks of aid being prevented from entering into Gaza by Israel, compounding critical shortages of medical supplies, food, clean drinking water and adequate shelter. The U.N. has reported that child malnutrition cases have doubled in northern Gaza as a result.

(PHOTO): A 3-year-old girl has her arm measured with MUAC tape to assess her level of malnutrition.
John, in this photo, three-year-old Dima is being treated for malnutrition at an IRC-supported mobile health unit in Gaza. A health worker carefully wraps MUAC (mid-upper arm circumference) tape around her tiny arm to assess the severity of her malnutrition. She is in the 'red' zone, meaning severely malnourished and the most extreme measure.
She receives ready-to-use therapeutic food—a lifesaving, nutrient-dense paste that helps children regain strength.
Through the Infant and Young Child Feeding Program, children like Dima continue to receive treatment and weekly follow-up care, giving them a chance to recover.
Dima is just one example of countless children around the world whose lives hang in the balance.

To prevent further humanitarian catastrophe, the IRC urges that the ceasefire is immediately resumed, and Israel allows for the unfettered flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza. A ceasefire is the best way to protect Palestinian lives and allow for the release of the remaining hostages.
