I can’t believe what I’ve seen from Trump’s new Secretary of Education. Just last week, she gutted the department, laid off hundreds of dedicated civil servants, and cut critical programs for our students.

Then, she went on live TV and started talking about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act – except she didn’t even know what it was.

So not only does Secretary McMahon not know what she’s talking about, but she’s also fired 1,300 people who could educate her about the agency she now heads. 

Education is a lifeline, folks, and it’s shameful that the leader of our Department of Education doesn’t even understand its importance. Kids across Virginia will get left behind because of this.

Education has been, and will continue to be, a top legislative priority for me. I have championed legislation and budget amendments to provide increased support for our educators and for our most vulnerable students, including English Language Learners and students with disabilities.

By supporting our educators and students, by addressing target areas of inequality, protecting vulnerable populations in our schools, and dedicating ourselves to keeping our schools free from gun violence, I am working to ensure accessible and equitable education for all of our students.

We also must continue to develop pathways for degree-seeking students at our community colleges and public universities while simultaneously increasing workforce career training opportunities.

All of this is possible if we invest in education and invest in students. But if we follow Trump’s lead, I’m afraid that won’t happen.
