Elon Musk’s “chainsaw against bureaucracy” looks set to quickly become a “chainsaw against democracy.”

Citing widespread (largely non-existent) fraud and abuse throughout the administrative state – the regulators and agencies millions of Americans depend on – Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has decimated the public sector.

But the mass restructuring of the government isn’t over yet. Democracy itself looks to be next up on the chopping block.

While US news today has been focused on the ludicrous and embarrassing ‘Signal-gate ([link removed]) ’ fiasco, an astonishing new executive order ([link removed]) from the White House slipped by without getting as much attention as it deserved.

In addition to requiring proof of citizenship just to register to vote, the order gives Homeland Security and DOGE the power to comb through states’ voter rolls, ostensibly to root out supposed fraudsters.

Musk and Trump have repeatedly claimed that millions of immigrants illegally vote in US elections. That lie has been thoroughly debunked ([link removed]) .

Research shows remarkably few incidents of non-citizen voting. Just 30 votes out of 23.5 million reviewed (0.0001%) in one major study were flagged for further investigation – and even those weren’t even necessarily confirmed.

It’s been just over two months since Trump took office, and already the world’s richest man is set to have unprecedented and unelected control over America’s voter registration system.

The Trump-Musk project is not about “efficiency” or “security.” It’s about control. It’s about dismantling public institutions, eroding democratic rights, and silencing opposition. That’s not just an American problem. It’s a global warning shot.

Trump’s assault on democracy should disqualify him from addressing any democratic institution, let alone the mother of parliaments. If we stand for equality, accountability, and the rule of law, then we must stand against giving this man a platform in Westminster.
