I’m sure you’ve seen the major news about senior government officials, including the CIA Director, National Security Advisor, Secretary of Defense and even the Vice President - were using an unclassified texting app to plan a military strike.

I was on All In with Chris Hayes talking about it last night - you can watch here.

When I worked at the CIA, I locked up my phone every day because it wasn’t safe to bring it into an office with classified documents and information. It is drilled into everyone, no matter their seniority, that you do not disclose classified information on any public platforms. Everyone who works in national security knows how critical this is to every mission.

I want to make sure we don’t lose track of why this is important: there are human beings who can lose their lives because of reckless information sharing.

Adversaries like China, Russia, and Iran are constantly trying to hack the phones of senior government officials. An entire computer network exists to handle classified information for exactly that reason.

If these were regular soldiers or a civilian CIA officer like I was, they would be reprimanded, likely fired, prosecuted and possibly jailed.

From what I heard, the military spouses have better operational security in their Facebook groups than the Secretary of Defense.

But this Administration believes they are above the law — and seemingly don’t care what US forces and US operations they put at risk.

This is about the security and safety of the Americans and allies deployed around the world, and the so-called “leaders” at the top need to take accountability for that. I am demanding that accountability, and you can trust that I will always do everything I can to protect and strengthen our national security.
