** Defend Social Security Against Trump/Musk
------------------------------------------------------------
Trump/Musk have been furiously slashing and gutting the federal government so that they can extend Trump's 2017 tax-cuts-for-the-wealthy before they expire at the end of this year. Now they are also targeting Social Security (SS) to benefit their big Wall Street donors. Through staff cuts and office closures, they are deliberately crippling the Social Security Administration (SSA) while at the same time imposing new, draconian regulations preventing recipients from conducting Social Security business by phone as has been encouraged since the 1980s.
They explicitly state that their intention is to force people to personally visit one of the remaining (under-staffed) SSA offices or use a complex web-based system that is hard for seniors to navigate without assistance. They know this will hobble the system and frustrate SS recipients. Their plan is to then use that frustration as a pretext for “privatizing” Social Security.
Privatization has long been a goal of the Republican Party and the mega-donors they serve. Under privatization, each person's SS account will be managed by that individual—or, far more likely—by for-profit Wall Street brokers and hedge funds, or local financial advisors, all of whom will be paid fees from the recipient's account. The SSA currently invests all of its funds in safe rock-solid U.S. government bonds, but privatization places each retiree's benefits at investment risk. Wall Street knows that privatization will surge enormous sums into the stock market, increasing stock prices and vastly enriching investors who already hold large portfolios.

** MUNI Service Cuts Update
------------------------------------------------------------
On March 18th, 250 transit activists, supported by Supervisors Fielder, Melgar, and Mahmood, rallied against proposed MUNI service cuts. Following the rally, at least 65 people voiced their opposition during public comment at the SFMTA Board meeting, while over 5,000 individuals expressed their concerns via email.
Despite this opposition, the SFMTA Board voted 3-2 in favor of implementing service cuts this summer. However, it’s worth noting that the approved cuts were significantly reduced compared to earlier proposals this year.
Impact of Public Advocacy
The public’s efforts yielded several positive outcomes:
1. The most severe cuts were removed from consideration.
2. The City Board of Supervisors passed resolutions supporting MUNI.
3. The Mayor began discussing a potential 2026 ballot measure for MUNI.
Upcoming Decision
It’s important to note that the 3-2 vote for summer service cuts is insufficient for implementation, as four SFMTA Board members must vote in favor. The Board will have another opportunity to reject the cuts at their meeting on Tuesday, April 1.
What you can do:
* Before Saturday, March 29
Call your supervisor ([link removed]) and say, “As your constituent I urge you to support a transfer from the City's General Fund to SFMTA to prevent drastic service cuts.” Feel free to add personal details about why this issue is important to you.
* Before Monday, March 31
Email the SFMTA Board of Directors at [email protected], urging them to use the SFMTA reserve funds to prevent service cuts. Feel free to add personal details about why this issue is important to you.
** AB 89 and why we can’t concede trans kids’ rights
------------------------------------------------------------
Recently, our own Governor has chosen to aid and abet right-wing culture warriors ([link removed]) like Charlie Kirk, inviting them on his new podcast to agree with their attacks on transgender girls who want to play in school sports. While we have already asked our members to call him and demand he apologize, his actions are having real-world effects.
AB 89 ([link removed]) was introduced in the California Assembly as a bill to exclude trans youth from girls’ sports. Trans girls are girls, and every girl should have the opportunity to participate in her school’s sports teams. Every child, trans or not, has the right to equal participation. We cannot accept proposals to take that right away.
Excluding trans youth from sports is dangerous for many reasons. Here are some important ones:
1. It makes trans children and their parents feel excluded and targeted. This is bullying, and it is wrong.
2. It exposes all children—including cisgender children!—to accusations of being the “wrong” gender. Children so accused would have to prove their gender via invasive methods, such as genital inspection. Do you want your child to have to do a blood test or be strip-searched to be allowed to play their favorite sport?
3. It sacrifices a vulnerable minority to fascist culture warriors. They will never be appeased; appeasement only encourages them to attack more and more people. We must close ranks and protect our children, our school peers, and our neighbors. Never give anybody up to fascism.
Call your Assemblymember ([link removed]) and tell them to vote NO on AB 89.
** Kevin Mullin Town Hall Report

One of our members attended Rep. Kevin Mullin’s Town Hall on Thursday, March 20. They found Mullin’s message to the crowd of anxious constituents to be mixed. While he agreed that the current administration presents a real threat, he shied away from calling our situation a constitutional crisis and was surprised by the calls to fight harder.
