Hey Friend,
Two minutes of action could protect trans people’s right to vote nationwide.
Next week, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on H.R.22, the “SAVE Act," which would restrict access to voting for millions of citizens, especially immigrants, people of color, transgender people, and married women. Will you take 2 minutes right now [[link removed]] and urge your Representative to vote “NO” on this discriminatory bill and protect your voting rights?
H.R.22 would require all Americans to provide documentation of their citizenship, in person, when registering to vote or updating their voter registration information. For most people, this means presenting either a passport or their birth certificate to register to vote, which for many trans people, might not reflect the name that they use.
In states with voter ID laws, trans people would face additional barriers to voting because their photo ID must match the name on a voter’s registration. Only one in three trans people has their chosen name on all their documents. H.R.22 would discriminate against countless trans voters—and millions of other Americans who lack access to documentation or change their name for any reason, including taking a spouse’s name.
The SAVE Act is unnecessary legislation and is not actually about protecting elections--it’s about disenfranchising marginalized communities.
In a time where trans rights are under attack at historic rates, our community is more committed than ever to making our voices heard. According to our 2022 U.S. Trans Survey early insights report, three-quarters (75%) of voting eligible respondents reported that they had voted in the 2020 presidential election, compared to 67% in the U.S. population. We must make sure bills like the SAVE Act don’t impact our community’s access to vote.
Please contact your Representative today and demand that they vote NO on H.R.22.
