Lawmakers in 9 states propose measures to undermine same-sex marriage rights -- NBC Out
John, bigots know they've had a sympathetic majority on the Supreme Court. In Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, they're pushing bills that would narrowly define marriage as only between one man and one woman. In Michigan, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, they're trying to pass legislation urging SCOTUS to overturn marriage equality entirely!
But here's the good news: in North Dakota, LGBTQ+ State Senator Joshua Boschee led the charge to ensure their marriage bill DIED. In Michigan, State Senator Jeremy Moss ensured their marriage bill was called out, and together with other LGBTQ+ state legislators, is pushing to enshrine marriage equality in the state!
John, this is a great start. But we have to keep building LGBTQ+ political power in these states. Donate $9 or more to ensure we can keep electing LGBTQ+ candidates who will protect our rights!
Right now, more than half of the U.S. states have outdated bans that would immediately go into effect after a ruling. But we've been electing LGBTQ+ candidates who are fighting to defend love. The candidates we elected in California, Colorado and Hawaii successfully placed marriage equality on the ballot last year - and successfully protected love! In Virginia, State Sen. Adam Ebbin and Del. Rozia Henson are working to repeal the amendment stating that marriage is between a man and a woman, and instead, enshrine same-sex and interracial marriage in the Virginia Constitution. In New Jersey, incumbent state legislator Luanne Peterpaul was instrumental in bringing marriage equality to New Jersey.
This is HUGE progress, and we have to keep the momentum going. We can expand pro-equality majorities in state legislatures around the country and ensure the LGBTQ+ leaders fighting for us are elected. Our candidates are ready to repeal outdated trigger bans on LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive freedom. Donate today to ensure pro-choice LGBTQ+ candidates WIN and stop the Supreme Court from rolling back our rights!
Thanks for fighting back,
Lizzie Bjork
