Friend, folks love to ask me:
“Eric, what was your inspiration for becoming a meteorologist?”
The truth is, I love chasing tornadoes and lightning now. But when I was younger, I was terrified of storms. I remember being nine watching the Delta Air Lines Flight 191 plane crash on the news and feeling so unsettled.
But I had a saving grace: my local weatherman, “TV Eric.” Yes, he also happened to be named Eric, and he explained what was happening and helped me feel safe during scary moments. I also remember Eric making it clear that our technology to detect these disasters was not up to standard.
I became a meteorologist to help people feel safe. I just never imagined that decades later we’d be dealing with the same issues with our detection capabilities not being up to snuff. But that’s exactly where things stand under this administration.
We need to be clear here: Trump’s cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are an attack on science, an attack on truth, and represent a silencing of voices dedicated to making us not just feel safe but actually be safe.
I can rage about how “young Eric” would’ve reacted to this news, but anger alone won’t solve this moment. We need to keep up the pressure and fight every day – in and outside of Congress -- for truth, safety, and what’s right. And we absolutely have to flip the House, secure a majority, and protect our safety and act on climate.
With our end of quarter deadline less than a week away, we have the opportunity to publicly demonstrate our strength. Please contribute now. Every dollar helps build our storm larger.
