Friend,

Last month, I voted against a House Republican budget that would have imposed a $880 billion cut to Medicaid . That cut would pay for an extension of President Trump’s massive tax break for the wealthy.

You read that right. Republicans want to cut services for the 24% of Americans who rely on Medicaid in order to put more money into the pockets of the richest 1% of Americans.

With the Republicans holding a razor-thin majority, we needed only two Republicans to oppose this drastic budget. We could only find one.

I shouldn’t be so surprised – I’ve been fighting against Republican efforts to undermine affordable healthcare every year that I’ve been in Congress. But there’s something especially brazen about this new plan to slash services for 72 million Americans.

Keep in mind that Medicaid isn’t just important to Democrats. Low-income Americans in Red states and Blue states alike rely on federal assistance to access life-saving healthcare (California, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, and New York top the list).

If the federal government breaks its promise to help fund healthcare services for low-income Americans and individuals with disabilities, states will face a terrible choice. Without federal support, states can either raise taxes or cut services. Here in Connecticut, dropping the Medicaid expansion in response to these cuts would grow our uninsured population [[link removed]] by 312,000, or approximately 72%.

Thankfully the Senate hasn’t passed this budget yet, so I’ll keep raising hell in the weeks to come.

– Jim
