Dear John,

Last week, the tragic death of George Floyd brought to the forefront once again the corrosive role that racism has played in our nation’s history, and the ways that it continues to plague our society and endanger the Black community.

While we continue to witness an unequal criminal justice system in this country, there are things we all must do to make change: raise awareness, organize, and then cast our ballots in support of candidates who will make real reforms. It’s clear from the events of this week that equality and democracy are on the ballot this November.

Unfortunately, what happened in Minneapolis -- and similar tragedies that have happened all too often across America -- damages the trust and confidence in our nation's law enforcement agencies. Moving forward, it’s time to instate a national standard regarding use of force, training and recruitment.

In the meantime, millions of Americans are gathering in peaceful and patriotic protest, and we must defend and guarantee the right to peacefully assemble and be heard.

I was very troubled that in our very own Yucaipa, protesters were met with threats and opposition earlier this week. These protesters across our nation have every right to express their frustration over the unequal economic and criminal justice systems in our country.

We are dealing with multiple crises at the same time -- 40+ million Americans have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I have spoken with so many people who have lost their jobs, people who can't pay their rent, and also with veterans and senior adults who are worried about where they are going to get their next meal.

It has never been more important to come together, listen to each other, organize, help each other, speak up for those in need, and participate in our democracy. We can all do our part to help bring about real change.

All my best,

Chris
