Two months ago, I gave birth to my son, Sam. Since then, we’ve both traveled back and forth between Colorado and Washington to fight back against the GOP’s ugly attacks on regular families and raise Sam at home in Colorado during his critical first months of development.

Since we welcomed Sam to our family, so many people have asked me “How are you balancing working in Congress while raising a newborn?” The honest truth is, it hasn’t been easy. That’s why I’m working to change Congress for the better.

Earlier this year, I introduced a bipartisan resolution to allow new parents to vote remotely while they care for their newborn child at home. It’s unacceptable that there are no options for us to vote and represent our constituents when we welcome a new child. It doesn’t have to be this way.

House Republican leadership refused to let us vote on my resolution, but I didn’t let that stop me. My colleague filed a discharge petition — and now, we’ve gathered enough signatures to force a vote and ensure Congress is more accessible for young families and regular people.

Sam is only two months old, but he’s already played a key role in changing the hearts and minds of lawmakers. By breaking down barriers that prevent young people from serving, Sam and I are both making sure Congress actually looks like the people we’re fighting for.

Historically, Congress has been dominated by wealthy, older men. I’m proud to be one of the moms in Congress who are changing the way we do things despite the opposition of Republican leadership. If you believe our government needs to better reflect the people we serve, chip in today to help me keep fighting for the needs of young women and regular families in Washington.
