John, Donald Trump has officially taken action to end the Department of Education:
Public schools have been in the crosshairs of the far-right for decades. As outlined in Project 2025, their goal is to fully dismantle this agency and push for the privatization of our kids’ education.
If the Trump administration succeeds, this could mean the end of programs that support students from all walks of life from kindergarten to college — especially students with disabilities or who come from low-income families and rural areas.
The thing is, like much of his agenda, Trump doesn’t have the authority to do this. The president can’t just make a federal agency disappear without input from Congress: it’s yet another executive power-grab and direct challenge to the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution.
Organizations like the American Federation of Teachers and the NAACP, along with Democratic attorneys general have already filed lawsuits to stop this assault on our nation’s education system, but we’ve seen how this administration is already pressuring judges to fall into line.
Americans don’t just deserve a good education — we deserve a fair, trustworthy court system that stands up for our rights and our democracy.
