This is a different email than I usually send, John.

I wanted to take a moment to share why I first ran for Congress. I hope you’ll read this message in its entirety, then consider making a $3 donation to keep me in Washington fighting for you.

When I take a step back and remember why I decided to run to flip CA-27 blue, and why I’m already gearing up for re-election, I think of my family – specifically, my daughter Maya.

I’ll never forget the day, eight years ago now, that Maya came home from kindergarten telling me about her day. Instead of telling me about a fun activity she did, she recalled the “exercises” she’d done with her classmates.

She didn’t quite grasp the concept at the time, but she was describing an active shooter drill.

That moment continues to have a profound impact on me – both as a father and now as a Congressman. We live in a country where for some families, a hug goodbye before school or work, a concert, a movie, a church service could be the last.

Despite this reality, some of my extreme colleagues are still unwilling to make the common sense changes Americans desperately need to save lives.

And it’s not just gun violence, John. We’ve seen women’s rights stripped away with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Maya now has less control over her body than my wife and even my mom did at her age.

We have a lot of work ahead of us, and I’m so proud that we put together a grassroots coalition that flipped this seat. With Republican control of Congress and the presidency, now is not the time to check out – it’s the time to dig in our heels and fight for what’s right.

This district is already ranked as one of the most consequential races in the midterm elections. Will you stand with me and chip in a donation of $3 or any amount toward our end-of-quarter fundraising goal?
