The Scalise Capitol Report

Cristobal has weakened to a tropical depression, but is expected to strengthen back to a tropical storm on Friday as the storm re-emerges in the Gulf of Mexico. Cristobal is expected to make landfall somewhere along the Gulf Coast on Sunday. The National Hurricane Center forecasters predict that tropical-storm-force-winds could reach Louisiana’s coast as early as 8 p.m. on Saturday.

We must recognize this storm as a serious threat and prepare accordingly. With the strong possibility of storm surge, heavy rainfall and strong winds, we must stay vigilant and prepare for potential storm damage and flooding.

According to NOAA, an above-normal 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is expected. As you are preparing, I wanted to share tips that will be useful ahead of Tropical Depression Cristobal and throughout hurricane season.

Be Prepared:

  • Plan a place to meet your family in case you are separated from one another in a disaster. Choose an out-of-state contact for everyone to call and check in.

  • Determine the needs of family members who may live elsewhere, but need your help in a hurricane. Check on the safety of your neighbors as well, especially those that may need extra assistance.

  • Protect your property with storm shutters or plywood for windows and sandbags to prevent flood damage. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking. Bring things indoors including lawn furniture, toys, trash cans, hanging plants or anything that could fly through a window.

  • Know how to shut off utilities. Know where gas pilots are located and how the heating and air-conditioning system works.

  • Keep your automobile fueled; if electric power is cut off, gas stations may not be able to operate pumps for several days. Be sure to have cash on hand as credit card readers may not be functioning.

  • Learn evacuation routes and contraflow procedures. Determine where you would go and how you would get there if you needed to evacuate. You can get information on the best Hurricane Evacuation Route by clicking here.

  • Gather personal documents, including driver’s license, Social Security card, proof of residence, insurance policies, will, deeds, birth and marriage certificates, etc. Make a record of these documents and your valuable possessions. Take photos of your belongings and the current state of your home.

  • Assemble a disaster supplies kit. Include a battery-powered radio, flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, blankets, clothing, food and water, prescription medications and medical supplies.

  • If you are receiving Social Security or Veterans Benefits make sure you have direct deposit.
This will ensure you receive all of your benefits. The Social Security Administrations telephone number is 1-800-772-1213 or go to the website at www.ssa.gov. The Veterans Administrations telephone number is 1-800-827-1000.

  • Stay tuned for updates and listen to warnings and evacuation orders from local authorities. WWL-Radio (870AM; 105.3FM) is the designated emergency broadcast station.

  • It is always recommended to have flood insurance. Standard homeowner's insurance does not cover flood damage. Visit floodsmart.gov for more information.

  • Louisiana has a comprehensive emergency preparedness guide. Keeping a printed a copy on hand is helpful. Find the guide here.
