Dear Neighbor,

While raising eight children, my mother returned to school as an adult to become a teacher. Her dedication and perseverance were inspiring, instilling in me at an early age a deep understanding of the value of education.

That’s why President Trump’s attack last week on the Department of Education infuriates me. His illegal executive order is a direct assault on the future of our students.

Abolishing the Department of Education would have catastrophic consequences for students nationwide. It would lead to mass teacher layoffs, overcrowded classrooms, and disproportionately harm students with disabilities. It would also push higher education and job training further out of reach for many middle- and working-class families.

Let me be clear: the president does not have the authority to dismantle a department created by Congress. I’m fighting back to protect our students and educators against this reckless executive order. As a cosponsor of the Department of Education Protection Act, I’m working to ensure that federal funds cannot be used to close or alter the department. I have also called on Secretary Mahon to address concerns about DOGE’s access to our students' private data. And, as a member of the Rapid Response Task Force, I have been actively involved in coordinating litigation with California and other states to safeguard our schools.

I will oppose any bill that tries to close the Department of Education. I won’t let the Trump administration steal our children's futures to bankroll more tax breaks for billionaires.

Stay safe,
