Donald Trump and his allies could be laying the groundwork for something unthinkable: military action in Mexico.

Just a few weeks ago, for the first time since World War II, Donald Trump invoked a 1798 wartime law — the Alien Enemies Act — to deport Venezuelan immigrants without due process. On the day he was inaugurated, Trump officially designated cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, and Elon Musk openly stated “that means they’re eligible for drone strikes.”

What's more, Trump’s former counterterrorism chief, Seb Gorka, is openly advocating for military operations inside Mexico — without cooperation from the Mexican government or authorization from Congress.

Let’s be absolutely clear: This is how reckless ideas turn into deadly policies. A U.S. war in Mexico won’t stop fentanyl from reaching our communities. It won’t end the drug trade. It won't end the border crisis. But it will escalate violence, fuel displacement, and put the American military in harm’s way. But Trump's invocation of the Alien Enemies Act — which gives the president unchecked power to remove noncitizens without trial or judicial review — and his refusal to comply with federal rulings shows that he isn't willing to play by the rules.

Rep. Joaquin Castro has introduced a resolution condemning Trump's dangerous plans and reaffirming Mexico’s sovereignty. But Congress must act swiftly to pass it — before Trump turns his war plans into reality.
