“'Avoid travel:' Bridge linking Texas and Mexico targeted with bomb threat,” Houston Chronicle's Elizabeth L.T. Moore — “A bomb threat was made against a busy international bridge linking South Texas and Mexico a day after officials announced heightened security in the area.
The threat was made on Monday against the Gateway International Bridge connecting the business districts of Brownsville and Matamoros, Mexico, U.S. Customs and Border officials told ValleyCentral.com.
On Sunday, the U.S. Embassy and U.S. consulates in Mexico issued a security alert advising that bridges between Matamoros and Brownsville would see increased security presence and possible delays.
"As a precaution, the U.S. Consulate has advised employees to avoid travel on Gateway International Bridge and allow extra time for all border crossings," the notice said.

The notice advised people to postpone non-essential travel, plan for longer border crossing times, monitor local media for updates, be aware of their surroundings, and notify friends and family of their safety.
The notice warned of delays on the Gateway International Bridge specifically, but activity on the bridge Monday looked like any other day, according to ValleyCentral.
The Brownsville Police Department had been asked to increase security at the port of entry but did not increase its patrols or presence.
The Gateway International Bridge links the downtown business districts of Brownsville and Matamoros. It is used mainly by pedestrians, tourists, vehicles making local trips and employees of maquiladoras, factories on the Mexican side of the border that assemble products for export to the U.S.
Matamoros is in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory lists Tamaulipas as "Level 4 – Do Not Travel Due to Crime and Kidnapping."
"Criminal groups target public and private passenger buses, as well as private automobiles traveling through Tamaulipas, often taking passengers and demanding ransom payments," the advisory says.
Federal employees may travel only in limited areas in the state, with certain restrictions, according to the advisory.
"Organized crime activity – including gun battles, murder, armed robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, forced disappearances, extortion, and sexual assault – is common along the northern border and in Ciudad Victoria," the advisory says." Houston Chronicle ($)
