On March 20, Donald Trump signed an Executive Order (EO) directing the Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, to begin dismantling the Department of Education. This comes on the heels of the firing of 1,300 employees in the department and the closing of 5 offices that investigate civil rights complaints.

SNAP Challenge for One: How much do the cutters want to take out of this food basket?

I took the SNAP Challenge – to see what I could buy for the approximately $6 for one day that SNAP now provides for one person. A yogurt (breakfast); a frozen cheese pizza for one (lunch); a very little chicken pot pie (dinner); and a bag of frozen sugar snap peas that would be enough to last for several meals as a vegetable side. There’s a Looming Care Crisis In Our Country. Our Safety Net Isn’t Ready.

My mom had a successful career, earned a good salary, and banked a healthy pension. She set me up to chase my own American dream. One morning, my mom — then 62 and healthy — called me, chatted about the new hardwood floor she’d just laid herself, and told me about the fun she’d had at the movies the night before. “I’ll talk to you later, honey, I love you,” she said as she hung up.

Later that day, I got a call from the hospital telling me she’d had a massive stroke and wasn’t expected to survive.

No matter how successful we are, we can all fall victim to this country’s ailing care economy.
